LIving in silence - through the mirror

This is a commission piece designed to show some of the issue that South Asian women who suffer from the condition of Irritable bowel disease have to deal with on a daily basis. five artists have been commissioned to create unique pieces of work, which will then be shown together in various locations, beginning with New Cross Hospital.
This piece looks at the quiet time that is spent in getting ready for the day, or for a special event, I have used a simple dressing table where a woman with the condition may sit to put on ‘her outside’, I am ok face on’. The issues that these women have to deal with are represented by looking at items that may appear on a regular dressing table and swapping them for items that are more specific to the women affected,
Many women with this condition suffer from hair loss, so there is a wig and wig stand to one side of the table.
They are often concerned that they smell, due to frequent trips to the toilet or because they need to wear a colostomy bag, so there are soaps and perfumes dotted around the table
A photo frame shows relatives smiling children, ladies with the condition often do not have children or have smaller families than they otherwise would.
A wedding ring, many women either have problems with their relationships or don’t form them often because of their body image, they say that they do not feel attractive due to their scars or a colostomy bag
medication overflows the stands; women are often taking multiple medications to deal with the condition and its symptoms
Hospital identity bands mixed with other bangles on a jewelry stand to represent the many hospital visits that these women have.
There is a hot water bottle on the shelf and the drawers are overflowing with appointment and consultant letters.
Hospital appointment cards are on display
The mirror is a 2-way mirror, which has a screen behind which tells the story of Dionne a fictional name of a real-life woman who is living with the condition.
